Philosophy

While my philosophy around teaching is still developing, my philosophy around life in general would revolve around the idea of taking in as much information as possible from a wide variety of sources and also getting involved in as much as possible and this helps me to stay balanced, motivated and energetic in everything that I do.

With regards to a teaching philosophy I can definitely see myself having taken the methodology of constructivism to heart. I think it's grounded in practicality but it is also open to evolving and accommodating other styles of teaching. Similar to this I believe already in a child centred form of education, at primary level at least. These two things allow the teacher to teach a broad curriculum appropriate to the environment in which it is being thought but it also allows them the flexibility to adjust how that curriculum is thought along the lines of what the children are interested in themselves. It is important that parents have a say in what is taught to their children but it is perhaps more important that the children are involved in deciding what is thought as this will help engage their minds and even help them teach each other in a co-operative style.

I have a particular interest in learning about students with physical disabilities and also those with learning difficulties. This is somewhat because I help run a surf camp for kids with autism every summer and I want to learn more about these children and their experiences in education.

Some of my goals for my teaching career include:

  • Secure a permanent teaching position

  • Learn about the roles within the school environment and how a teaching career might progress

  • Continue lifelong learning throughout my career

  • Leave the profession in a better way than I found it
